How to Use Kiwi Underglaze
There are lots of ways to work with Kiwi Underglaze - just keep it thin and layered for the best results. Here are a few tried-and-true approaches potters love:
On bisqueware → Apply, cover with a clear glaze, then glaze-fire.
On greenware → Paint, then bisque-fire at cone 06 (1000 °C / 1800 °F) before glazing.
On bisqueware with an extra bisque → A second cone 06 firing “hardens on” the colour before glazing.
Once fired, colours intensify beautifully under glaze for a glossy, rich finish. Prefer a soft, velvety matte vibe? Skip the glaze and fire to cone 06 or higher - perfect for sculptural work and decorative surfaces.
Application Tips That Actually Help
- Thin layers win. One coat = translucent, two = semi-opaque, three = bold, solid colour.
- Want the brightest, juiciest shades? Top with a clear glaze and fire around cone 3–5 (~1180 °C / 2150 °F).
- Kiwi Underglaze can handle a wide range - anywhere from cone 04–9 (~1050–1260 °C / 1920–2300 °F).
- If things thicken, add just a splash of water to rehydrate - don’t drown the pigment.
Pro Tricks & Playful Techniques
- Give it a shake before you start - pigments like to settle.
- Clean brushes = crisp colours.
- Thin, even layers prevent cracking and peeling (we promise it’s worth it).
- Let each layer dry before adding the next or glazing.
- Go wild with masking tape, stencils, stamps, or wax resist for bold patterns and fine lines.
- Play with sgraffito, gradients, blending, or even misting with a spray bottle for soft effects.
- Test, test, test - fired colours shift slightly, and surprises happen.
- Apply a thin clear glaze for protection and extra vibrancy (too thick and it clouds).
- Avoid overfiring unless you like your colours a little moodier.
- Feeling artsy? Mix with water for a watercolour wash or layer up for painterly depth.
